My Story: From Worthless to Worthy
How Education & Spirituality Saved my Life.
Annii, hello, my name is Angela Ashawasegai (Native Angel). I am an Ojibwe member of Henvey Inlet First Nation, Canada, and I am a survivor of the 60’s Scoop.
My childhood was stolen from me. I survived years of unimaginable horrifying physical, sexual and mental abuse. I escaped from hell at age 16. Consequently, I ended up back in the child welfare system. Yet, Canada’s child welfare system and flawed health care system both failed to provide me with adequate health care. As a result, I survived 30 years of hardships without a diagnosis or treatment for childhood trauma. I lapsed into silence and shame, which overshadowed my invisible trauma wounds, and left me with no self-esteem.
As a result, in 2009, I hit rock bottom even after graduating with a Bachelor of Arts. I went on disability and vowed that I’d never work again. Accumulated experiences of lateral violence continued to re-trigger my unresolved trauma. I was living in survival mode, and I couldn’t heal my life. I couldn’t find resources. Self-loathing became a self-defeating habit as a result of having no extended family and limited community support. I was marginalized and alone. I believed that the world was against me. However, I was not entirely alone as I thought – I had support from the spirit world.
I became interested and inspired by the dream world and animal totems. I wrote down my dreams and learned how to interpret them. Many animals visited me in my dreams. Followingly, I learned to study animal totems as well. Thus, my spiritual growth became my strength, and I realized the animal world and dreams were helping me heal my Complex Trauma. Although my life was full of stressors, spirit guides never gave up on me.
One fateful day, a real-life Great Blue Heron risked its life to send me its medicine teaching. I learned to focus on my strengths and abilities rather than wallowing in self-pity, suicide ideation, and victimhood mentality. I changed my life by changing my thought patterns. I learned to think positively. The Great Blue Heron saved my life and is now one of my helpers.
In 2014, I started to shape my vision of helping others after reflecting on my education, spirituality, and life experiences. Despite enduring tragic misfortunes, I transformed them into lessons and wisdom. I realized that my life’s purpose is to inspire and motivate others in how to overcome trauma. Thus, I took an accredited training program, Indigenous Focusing-Oriented Therapy and Complex Trauma, which is how I became a certified Trauma Coach. I’m sharing my story to inspire hope for others that trauma recovery is possible. Never give up hope, your life matters.
